Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and Stony Brook University Hospital are in the initial stages of launching an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program and are seeking a self-motivated, forward thinking, academically-oriented and experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon to serve as its inaugural program director.
The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) is the only dental school on Long Island, caring for patients from Brooklyn to the East end of Suffolk County – 80,000 patient visits per year. It supports CODA accredited residency programs in dental anesthesiology, endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics. This mix of dental specialists, in one location, provides the optimal clinical and intellectual environment for the interdisciplinary planning and treatment of complex oral and maxillofacial surgery patients, resulting in more predictable outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The hospital-based facility for the program is integrated with other surgical disciplines in SBUH’s ambulatory surgery center. This will ensure convenient access for patients, facilitate the interdisciplinary care of patients and provide clinic visibility among all in the hospital. The inaugural program director will have the opportunity to develop operational protocols for the service and collaborative partnerships with SBUH.
Individuals applying for this position should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that develops strong and supportive relationships with faculty, staff, students and residents, and promotes collegiality. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.
