Research Interests
Discovering patterns in dental anomalies in children with orofacial clefting and using machine learning and artificial intelligence to mine data for patterns, using image classification algorithms to identify dental anomalies from intraoral photos, using artificial intelligence to help integrate technology into clinical operations, retention and recruitment strategies of dental school faculty

Brian J. Howe, DMD, MS attended Luther College (2002) with a Bachelor of Arts in biology. He went on to attend Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (2006) where he received his DMD. After graduation, Dr. Howe practiced general dentistry in Madison, WI. He completed a Master of Oral Science program at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (2013). In 2015, he joined the University of Iowa College of Dentistry as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Dentistry. He served as the director of clinics from 2019-2024. Dr. Howe currently serves as the associate dean for clinical operations and patient care at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in Stony Brook, NY. He is a fellow of the International College of Dentists and a member in the American Dental Association (ADA), New York Dental Association, Suffolk County Dental Association and the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Howe is also a member of the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL), and chair of the CDEL Anesthesiology Committee. He is also a peer reviewer for multiple medical and dental journals.
