After earning her undergraduate degree from New York University, Dr. Rhona Sherwin was accepted into the second graduating class of Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. Following graduation, she completed a two-year residency in pediatric dentistry at Beth Israel Medical Center. Her academic career has included faculty appointments at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York Medical College, and NYU College of Dentistry, where she served as program director of the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Sherwin joined the faculty at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in 1992 and, after more than 30 years of teaching and mentoring, attained the rank of clinical professor. As a principal investigator and faculty mentor, she has secured and overseen more than $3 million in grant funding to improve access to oral health care for underserved children. She currently serves as director of pediatric outreach, leading community-based programs that expand access to care for vulnerable children across Long Island.
