Patrick Lloyd, DDS, MS, dean of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, was elected by the American Dental Education Association’s House of Delegates to serve on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), at its annual session in March. His appointment was approved by the American Dental Association’s House of Delegates during the SmileCon 2024 annual meeting, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in October.
As one of a 32-person commission, Dean Lloyd will work to develop and approve accreditation procedures and standards by which dental and dental-related education programs are accredited. He began serving in this role upon the approval of his appointment, and will hold the position for four years.
“I am humbled and honored to have been selected by my peers to serve on CODA,” Dean Lloyd said. “Accreditation is the means by which we maintain the integrity of our profession and the trust of the public. It helps keep our programs contemporary, monitors their continuous quality improvement and provides our patients with the assurance that we have national standards as to how our dental professionals are educated and trained.”
CODA-accredited institutions include 77 Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) programs in the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as more than 700 advanced dental education programs and close to 600 allied dental education programs in the fields of dental assisting, dental hygiene, dental laboratory technology and dental therapy, in the US and Canada.
“We are fortunate to have an organization in place whose commitment to excellence has resulted in the highest level of dental education there’s ever been,” Dean Lloyd said. “I look forward to working on CODA and interacting with its members to uphold the standards so that we may continue to provide such quality instruction and care.”
In addition to his deanship, Dean Lloyd is a professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology at Stony Brook. Previously, Lloyd served as dean at University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He also held prominent positions at University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Marquette University School of Dentistry, the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC, as well as Milwaukee Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
His notable professional appointments include serving as president of the American College of Prosthodontists, co-president of the International College of Prosthodontists and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Prosthodontics.
