Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine has agreed to become a part of the BigMouthDental Data Repository, joining 17 other member dental schools and institutions that combine to contribute over six million patient records to the BigMouth database. The collaboration will enable students, residents and faculty to utilize the data source to advance their research, answer clinical questions, and treat and serve patients better.

“Joining the BigMouth data repository marks a pivotal step forward for our school and the Dental Care Center,” said Brian Howe, DDS, MS, associate dean for clinical operations and patient care at Stony Brook. “It not only amplifies our research capabilities but also places us at the forefront of data-driven innovation in dental education and patient care. By contributing to and learning from this collaborative network, we’re helping to shape the future of oral health on a national scale.”

BigMouth was established in 2012, funded by a National Library of Medicine grant to develop an inter-university oral health research database. In just over a decade’s time, it has accumulated partially identifiable case information from patients in all 50 US states. Efforts from Stony Brook, which is one of two participating dental schools in New York State, will be led by Dr. Mina Mahdian, associate professor, Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology.

“To be able to contribute to, and have access to, such a vast repository of data can only help our students, residents, staff and faculty achieve the best results possible in caring for their patients and advancing dentistry through research,” said Patrick Lloyd, dean of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. “We are so pleased to be joining this community of dental institutions.”
