Through a new partnership, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine welcomed its first group of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) residents from Bronx-based NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln this July, marking the new beginning of a collaboration that expands advanced surgical training while enhancing patient care at Stony Brook University.
"It is with great excitement that we welcome the first two residents to this program,” said Patrick Lloyd, dean of the School of Dental Medicine. “Their arrival marks the beginning of an important milestone for our school, and we look forward to watching them develop into outstanding oral and maxillofacial surgeons while advancing our mission of excellence in education, research and patient care."
Residents will complete four-month rotations at Stony Brook, dividing their time between Stony Brook University Hospital and the Dental Care Center on South Campus. OMFS residents, along with other dental school providers, treat more than 1,000 patients annually in the hospital’s emergency department.
These experiences in both urban and suburban clinical settings will expose Lincoln residents to a diverse patient population and a broad range of cases, preparing them for successful careers in the field.
“We look forward to providing an exceptional surgical training opportunity for Lincoln’s residents for many years to come,” said Allan Kucine, associate professor and vice chair, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Fourth-year resident Mohammed Al-Sharea, DMD, and second-year resident Alvin Saju, DDS, make up the partnership’s inaugural class.
