April 2019 – With an ever-growing variety of career options available to dental school graduates, students are turning to those who have forged paths before them for guidance. Recently, a panel of four established professionals within different fields of dentistry met with students of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine to discuss their journeys following completion of their education. The event was organized by the Alpha Omega (AO) Club in conjunction with the Alumni Association and the Office of the Dean.
The panel, attended by four alumni, readily connected with students in attendance by offering insights and words of encouragement. “The conversation between the moderator and panelists was incredibly informative and enlightening,” said Moses Adler, President of AO. “It was particularly thought-provoking to hear life perspectives from people who took such different career paths.”
Joseph DiBernardo, DDS ‘04, Endodontist, and Thomas Grandville, DDS ‘11, Pediatric Dentist, presented their experiences within private practice, Alexandra Schott, DDS ‘17, LT, DC, United States Navy, discussed her career within the military including the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and Raj Mangalick, Vice President, Business Development of The Smilist, spoke to opportunities within Dental Support Organizations.
“Being part of the alumni panel reminded me that no matter how many times I move or change jobs with the military, I can always count on my Stony Brook roots to welcome me back,” said Dr. Schott. “Stony Brook graduates are unique, and I hope that each panelist’s story inspired the students,” she added.
The event’s intended mission was a success: “Several people have mentioned to me how after hearing what the panelists have to say, they’ve now started seriously considering what lies ahead of them once they graduate,” said Moses. Alumni and other industry professionals will return to conduct panels continue similar discussions in upcoming months at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine.
