Dental Instruments - Past and Present Exhibition Opens at Health Sciences Library
STONY BROOK, NY, December 1, 2014 - Travel back in time to see instruments used by dentists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. “Dental Instruments — Past and Present” showcases the fascinating tools and practices that are precursors to today’s dental instruments and care.
The objects are from the personal collection of the late R. Sherman Mills, MD, the Baer Collection from the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and the private collection of Allan J. Kucine, DDS.
This exhibit is presented by Stony Brook University Libraries, Stony Brook Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine and the Suffolk County Historical Society.
Constantia Constantinou, MA, MLS, Dean, Stony Brook University Libraries served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Speakers included Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine; Mary R. Truhlar, DDS, MS, Interim Dean, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine; Kathryn Curran, Director, Suffolk County Historical Society; and Allan J. Kucine, DDS, Associate Dean for Information Technology and Acting Chair, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Philias Garant, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Periodontology, and former Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine presented an enlightening lecture titled, "History of Dental Medicine."
Following Dr. Garant, Xiaolin Nong, PhD, DDS, Visiting Scholar, Stony Brook University Libraries, delivered a talk titled, “The Idea of Exchange," which was the inaugural lecture of a series sponsored by the Office of Global Library Initiatives.
The exhibit will run through Novermber, 2015.
Among the exhibit items featured is the Wilcox-Jewett Obtunder (circa 1905) that was used to inject anesthetics (typically cocaine) for dental procedures.
