Letter from the Editors
This edition of the Newsletter contains a copy of the proposed amendments to the AAOB By-Laws. Please take the time to review these proposed amendments and vote on them in the ballot enclosed with your copy of this Newsletter. The officers request that all members return their ballots by February 16, 1998 so that we will be able to present your votes at the 1998 AAOB business meeting in Minneapolis. Please note any comments concerning the By-Laws in the space provided on the ballot. In addition, the Editors of this Newsletter request that you provide any comments you may have concerning the Newsletter on this ballot. The association officers would also like you to note any comments you may have on the association's activities. In particular, the officers would appreciate your suggestions for strengthening existing programs and any new programs you would like to see initiated. Your response will be discussed at the 1998 AAOB business meeting.
This edition of the Newsletter contains important information concerning the AAOB business meeting which will occur on March 5, 1998 from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the AADR meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota Please make the time to attend these important events if you will be in Minneapolis this year.
This Newsletter contains important information concerning the new AAOB Sponsored Award in Oral Biology to graduating dental students. Such an award program would serve to increase the visibility of the Association among dental school faculty and would be one vehicle to increase the Association's membership. The award program would also promote interest and research in Oral Biology among undergraduate dental students. All members are asked to remind their Deans of the award program so that we can have as many schools as possible participating in the program. International members are also invited to participate in this program at their institution. International members should contact the Committee Chair directly to receive information and nomination forms for this award program. Letter from the President, Dr. Frank Oppenheim
I am very proud of the advancements we have made in our organization since its inception in 1989. Recently, I was
viewing the AAOB web site and was impressed by our increased capability to collaborate, communicate and obtain information
through technology. A great deal of effort has gone into the creation of this web site and we should be immensely pleased
at the result. I give praise to our Secretary/Treasurer, Steven London who has been instrumental in the creation of the web site.
In the Spring of 1998 the American Association of Oral Biologists will be conferring its first Oral Biology Award which is to be given to a worthy senior dental student from each dental school in the United States and Canada. The purpose of this award is to recognize student achievement and potential in oral biology and to encourage student research in oral biology. I encourage all our members to make sure that you support this program at your institution. We recognize that Oral Biology, by its nature interrelates with all the clinical disciplines of dentistry and that there is a close relationship between oral biology and the traditional basic health sciences of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Oral biology builds on these disciplines and integrates and applies them in varying degrees to the study of oral and orally related problems. It is our hope that we will continue to educate scientists and clinicians who are able provide knowledge and expertise in the basic health sciences and the clinical science disciplines within a dental school setting.
Please plan to attend the AAOB business meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 1998 during the American Association of Dental Research meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We will be discussing a number of important items. Of particular interest to me is having the AAOB strongly support graduate programs in Oral Biology and we will discuss how best to accomplish this goal. In this regard, I will announce the formation of a committee to review the curriculum for Graduate Oral Biology Programs at our business meeting this March. These items and the rest of the agenda for our meeting are detailed in this issue of the Newsletter.
I would like to thank all the officers and AAOB members who have worked this past year with me and the officers. In particular, I would like to thank Dr. Andrew Spielman who has completed the review of the AAOB By-Laws. This was an immense task and I am sure you will all join me in thanking him for a job well done. I would like to also thank Dr. Frank Dowd and his committee which planned and is now implementing the Oral Biology award program. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Steve London who has faithfully kept me informed and given me guidance throughout this past year. My thanks to Steve for his support.
I am anticipating an excellent meeting in March, 1998 and I hope to see you all there.
AOB News
AAOB Membership Status and Financial Condition as of December 31, 1997
1997 was again an excellent year for the AAOB both financially and in terms of the number of active members. We are also pleased
to welcome the new members who have joined the association in 1997. The current members are encouraged to continue recruiting
new members during 1998. Membership application forms are included with the mailing of this Newsletter and are also available
in all issues of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine. Additionally, a membership application form can be
obtained from the AAOB Home Page at http://www2.musc.edu/AAOB.html.
The following table provides information on the composition of our membership since the inception of the association in 1989. From this data, it is interesting to note that 48% of the original membership group from 1989 are still active members of the association and that these founding members comprise 42% of the total active membership of the association as of December 31, 1997.

1998 AAOB Business Meeting
The 1998 AAOB Business Meeting will be held in conjunction with the AADR meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota on
Thursday, March 5 from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. in Board Room 2 at the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel. A number of items of
interest will be discussed at this meeting and all members are urged to attend.
The planned agenda for the meeting includes the approval of the minutes from the 1997 meeting in Orlando, report on the AAOB elections, financial and membership reports, the status of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine, and a report from the Oral Biology Section of the AADS which will include an update on the AADS Foundation Knowledge initiative. We will discuss how best the AAOB can strongly support graduate programs in Oral Biology. We will also finalize the revisions of the AAOB By-Laws and membership application process at this time. Please review the proposed changes to the By-Laws and membership form and return the enclosed ballot to the Secretary/Treasurer. Dr. Frank Dowd will also discuss the status and recipients of the first series of the AAOB Award in Oral Biology program. These awards will be given to graduating dental students at their school's spring 1998 graduation ceremony. Finally, a discussion concerning next years AAOB program at the 1999 Vancouver IADR/AADR meeting will occur. Dr. Olav Alvares, AAOB President-elect will discuss our joining with the Japanese Association of Oral Biologists for a major program in 1999.
Starting in 1998, billing for Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine will be handled directly by the International Association of Dental Research
All current AAOB members will receive a copy of their 1998 dues notice with this Newsletter. 1998 dues remain at $12.00 for full and student members. Starting in 1998, the association is no longer billing for Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine (CROBM). Subscriptions to CROBM will now be handled directly with the publisher, the International Association for Dental Research. All current AAOB members should have received an invoice from the IADR last fall for their 1998 subscription to CROBM. AAOB members pay a reduced annual rate of $55.00 for CROBM (Air delivery is available for members outside of the US and Canada for an additional charge). Subscriptions to CROBM is optional for student members. 1999 AAOB Joint Program with the Japanese Association of Oral Biologists
At the 1999 IADR/AADR meeting in Vancouver, Canada, the AAOB plans to present a major symposium with the Japanese Association
of Oral Biologists. AAOB President-Elect, Olav Alvares has already had a number of discussion with the officers of the Japanese
Association of Oral Biologists and both associations have reached an agreement to jointly host a symposium in 1999. A joint AAOB-JAOB
reception is also planned. The tentative topic for the symposium is "Cytokine Biology in Oral Diseases". Please plan to
attend the 1998 business meeting as we further plan this project with the Japanese Association of Oral Biologists.
AAOB Award in Oral Biology for Graduating Dental Students
At the 1997 AAOB business meeting, it was agreed that the AAOB will initiate in 1998 an award program which will honor
graduating senior dental students who have been involved in research in Oral Biology during their dental school career. Such
an award will be given once a year to a senior dental student in each dental school at their spring student awards ceremony.
The committee to establish the Oral Biology Award was commissioned at the spring 1997 AAOB business meeting in Orlando, and
has now completed its work. The plan is as follows: In January of each year, beginning in 1998, a letter will be sent to the
Dean of each Dental School in the United States and Canada. In addition, AAOB members at international dental schools are also
encouraged to arrange for this award to be given at their institution. This letter will explain the purpose of the award,
list the criteria for the award, give information on the AAOB as the sponsoring organization of the award and give the deadline
for submission of the needed information on the candidate. The information requested will include a brief description of the
student's research and academic accomplishments, publications, presentations and academic rank. Each school will be encouraged
to fund a one year subscription to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine at the student discount rate. Our committee
formulated the criteria for the award and decided on the types of information needed from the schools. The criteria encompass
original research, critical thinking, future research potential, high academic standing, interest or appreciation for teaching,
and furthering of public understanding of oral biology. After receiving the names of the nominees, certificates will be printed.
Dr. Steven London, the AAOB Secretary/Treasurer, has agreed to make the certificates (suitable for framing) after the Committee
Chair, AAOB Past-President Dr. Frank Dowd, supplies the names of the nominees. Signatures of AAOB officers will be gathered at
the AADR meeting and the certificates mailed to each school in April. This award will give recognition to deserving dental
students as well as to introduce them to the AAOB and Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine. Thanks to all the
hard work of the members of the committee (Frank Dowd-Chair, Murray Robinovitch, Andrew Spielman and Bill Whitson).

AAOB By-Laws and Membership Application Process to be Evaluated in Orlando
This Newsletter contains a revised version of the Society's By-Laws. We would like you to read it and vote on it using the
enclosed ballot paper. It has been five years since the last update of our By-Laws was completed and the society is required
to review it on a regular basis. The charge to review it was made by Past-President Murray Robinovitch who requested two
appointed directors: Andrew I. Spielman and Firoz Rahemtulla to make suggestions, discuss it with other members of the Board,
and report it at the 1997 annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. The suggested amendments were presented by Andrew I. Spielman and,
due to the number of members who attended the Orlando meeting, it was decided to submit the final revised version in the next
Newsletter and ask all members to vote on it. The essence of the changes is the following:
- References to the initial "organizational period" were removed and the text updated accordingly. One article referring to this initial period was completely removed therefore, the numbering of the articles in the By-Laws shifted.
- Under Article III "Officers and Elections" - The Editor of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine (CROBM) was added to the list of officers who can hold elected positions in the association. The Editor was already a member of the Board but it was not stated if he/she can hold an elected office.
- Under Article V "Meetings of the Association" the time for notification of an AAOB meeting has been reduced from 90 to 45 days.
- Under Article VII "Budget, Dues and Assessments", a line was added concerning a requirement for full members to subscribe to CROBM.
- At the end of Article XI "Founders of the American Association of Oral Biologists: the list of founding members was added.
- To appeal to a wider audience the application for membership was updated.
The American Association of Oral Biologists World Wide Web Home Page
Since 1995 the AAOB has maintained an American Association of Oral Biologists Home Page on the World Wide Web. The AAOB
Home Page has been updated several times since its introduction in 1995 and we suggest that members visit this site on
a periodic basis. This site has had ~2000 visitors between August 1996 and January 1998. The AAOB Home Page contains
links to other dental sites of interest to AAOB members and has important information on the AAOB and its activities
(AAOB Bylaws, Curricular Guidelines for Oral Biology, past issues of AAOB Newsletters, abstracts of articles which appear
in current and past issues of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine, and AAOB Membership Application

Minutes of the 1997 Annual AAOB Business Meeting
The 1997 Annual AAOB business meeting was held on Thursday, March 20, 1997 from 5:30 - 6:30 P.M. in the Fairview Room
of the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Frank Dowd, AAOB president, opened the meeting and extended his appreciation
to the AAOB officers for their input during the preceding year. He then set the agenda and lead the membership in
their discussion of the following items of business.
Item 1: The minutes of the AAOB business meeting on Saturday, March 16, 1996 at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel were accepted as presented in the August, 1996 issue (Volume 4, Issue 2) of the American Association of Oral Biologists Newsletter.Item 2: Dr. Steven D. London, AAOB Secretary/Treasurer reported that the balance of Association funds as of December 31, 1996 was $6,905.55. There were 131 members in good standing for the 1997 calendar year. Dr. London reported that 1997 Dues will be $67.00 and include $12.00 AAOB Dues and $55.00 for the 1997 issues Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine. Subscription to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine will remain optional for associate (student) and retired members. Dues Notices were sent out in November, 1996.
1996 marked the second year that all full association members were required to subscribe to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine. Dr. London reported that he collected and forwarded $3,686.80 in subscription fees for 1996 issues of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine to the IADR/AADR. Dr. London thanked Mr. Bobby Phipps (IADR Membership Dues Coordinator) for his help in the coordination of the Journal subscriptions for AAOB members and for allowing international members to pay their dues by credit card to the AADR.
Dr. London reported that the IADR billed AAOB members of record during 1996 for 1997 subscriptions to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine. This created a great deal of confusion among AAOB members as to whether they should subscribe to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine directly with the IADR or as part of their AAOB dues. Dr. London suggested to the membership that it be more straightforward for AAOB members to pay their subscription to Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine directly to the IADR starting in 1998. This plan was adopted unanimously by the members.
Item 3:Dr. Murray R. Robinovitch reported the results of the 1997 AAOB election. Of 131 ballots mailed, 76 responded (55%). The following members were elected or appointed officers for 1997-1998:

Editor, CROBM Olav Alvares – Univ. of Texas, San AntonioItem 4: Because the AAOB Bylaws have not been formally reviewed since March 1992, AAOB President Murray Robinovitch requested the two appointed directors, Andrew I. Spielman and Firoz Rahemtulla, to make suggestions, discuss it with other members of the Board, and report it at the 1997 annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. The suggested amendments were presented by Andrew I. Spielman and additional changes were made to the document based on the input of the membership. Due to the number of members who were in attendance at the meeting, it was decided to submit the final revised version in the next Newsletter and ask all members to vote on it.
Item 5: Dr. Mark Wolff reported that he had examined the December 1995 Part II National Board examination for oral biology content. Dr. Wolff reported that between 5 and 10% of the questions directly concerned oral biology topics with a strong identification of oral biology questions to clinical situations. Dr. Wolff reported that he was very impressed with the scope and content of the examination and emphasized the critical role that oral biology plays in dental education.
Item 6: Dr. Steven London, Councilor of the AADS Oral Biology Section reported on the status of the AADS initiative on Competency based dental education. At the March 1997 AADS meeting, a clinical competency document was accepted by the AADS House of Delegates. Dr. London stressed that he emphasized the importance of Foundation Knowledge as a means to integrate the basic sciences and oral biology with clinical competencies. Dr. London encouraged AAOB members to join the AADS Oral Biology Section and to support its efforts in emphasizing the critical role of the basic sciences and oral biology in dental education.
Item 7: Dr. Olav Alvares, Editor of Critical Reviews in Oral Biology and Medicine, expressed his appreciation to the IADR/AADR for their excellent management of the Journal during the past year. Dr. Alvares reported that the subscription rate for members of the AAOB and all IADR members in 1997 will be $55.00. Dr. Alvares expressed his appreciation for the support of the AAOB and its members.
Item 8: Dr. Frank Dowd, AAOB President, initiated a discussion of a number of items of New Business. They included:
- A discussion of a plan to begin an AAOB award in Oral Biology for which will honor graduating senior dental students who have been involved in research in Oral Biology during their dental school career. Such an award would be presented by the AAOB to a graduating senior student who has been nominated by the dean upon recommendation of the faculty. After discussion and suggestions by the membership, the plan was unanimously adopted. A committee was appointed to implement this program with the plan that awards would be given in the Spring of 1998.
- Dr. Olav Alvares suggested that the AAOB should have a joint symposium at the 1999 IADR/AADR meeting in Vancouver, Canada. He suggested that this would be a good opportunity to interact with the Japanese Association of Oral Biologists. After discussion and suggestions by the members, it was decided that Dr. Alvares, with the support of the AAOB Officers, begin planning for this event. Dr. Alvares agreed that he would contact the Japanese Association of Oral Biologists and report his progress at the 1998 AAOB business meeting in Minneapolis.
With no further business items to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at 6:30 P.M.
News From the Oral Biology Section of the American Association of Dental Schools (AADS)
Greetings from your colleagues in the American Association of Dental Schools Oral Biology Section! Recently I
wrote to each of you outlining our Section's activities. I know that a number of you are members of our Section, and we
appreciate you present as well as your future support. For those of you who are not members of the AADS Oral Biology
Section, I would again encourage you to join our Section. I am also a member of the American Association of Oral Biologists
and appreciate the interactions that occur between the AAOB and the AADS Oral Biology Section. We are happy that Steve
London is our AADS Oral Biology Section's Councilor.
I want to invite you all to come to our AADS Oral Biology Section business meeting that will be held on Tuesday, March 3 from 9 to 11 A.M. in the Minneapolis Conference Center, Room 102B. In addition, I would also like to invite you to a program that our Section is co-sponsoring intitled, "Dental Informatics Techno-Fair" that will be held on Monday, March 2 from 10 A.M. - 1 P.M. in the Minneapolis Conference Center Room 102F-J. AADS Basic Science Sections Caucus
The Oral Biology Section of the American Association of Dental Schools will caucus with the other basic biomedical science sections at the annual session in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at 8-9 A.M. Check the meeting program for the room assignment. We will discuss progress on the development of Foundation Knowledge as it relates to the recently adopted clinical competency statements. Other items to be discussed include section viability, combined section programming, national projects, and a home page and/or a newsletter will also be discussed.
AADS Oral Biology Section Business Meeting
The Oral Biology Section of the American Association of Dental Schools will meet at the annual session in Minneapolis,
Minnesota on Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at 9-11 A.M. Check the meeting program for the room assignment. We will discuss
the sections progress in supporting the American Association of Dental Schools webpage, the section's involvement on
the development of Foundation Knowledge as it relates to the recently adopted clinical competency statements, and
other section projects. We will also continue discussion of topics raised in the Basic Science Sections caucus
which immediately precedes the Oral Biology Section business meeting. New officers will be elected. Please plan
to attend this meeting if you will be attending the American Association of Dental Schools meeting in Minneapolis.
AADS Oral Biology Section Joint Symposium "Dental Informatics Techno-Fair
What's new in information technology for dental educators? Join colleagues from 12 sections for a special program
on recent technological advances in dental education. Presentations and demonstrations ranging from 15 minutes to
one hour will take place in three rooms during a concurrent, three hour period. Two of the rooms will have Internet
access to allow participants to observe how the web can be used in dentistry for providing simulations, continuing
education, instructional materials, data bases for computer programs, lieterature reviews, clinical computerization
and other relevant topics for dental educators, administrators and informatics specialists. Presenters will include
section members from Pediatrics, Oral Biology, Periodontics, Pharmacology, Dental Hygiene Education, Behavior
Sciences, Anatomical Sciences, and Dental Informatics. The Techno-Fair will be on Monday, March 2, 1998 at
10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. in Minneapolis Convention Center Rooms 102F-J.
AADS Anatomical Science Sections Presents "A Program that Promises to be Easy to Swallow"
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at 4:00 - 5:00 P.M. if you plan to attend the 75th Annual Session
of the American Association of Dental Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A joint program, Salivary Gland
Dysfunction: Current Research, Clinical Application and its Place in the Curriculum, will be sponsored by two
AADS Sections - Gerontology/Geriatric Education and Anatomical Sciences. This program will offer an interdisciplinary
approach to research and teaching on salivary gland dysfunction in older adults. Included will be applications of
this concept in the dental/dental hygiene curriculum, including basic science and clinical research and didactic
instruction, as well as patient education. Dr. Joan Pellegrini, Chair-elect, Section on Gerontology/Geriatrics
Education, will serve as the moderator. Three speakers will present the following topics: Age-related changes in
the salivary gland (Kathleen Dobrosielski Vergona, University of Pittsburgh), Current salivary gland research and
its clinical application (Philip Fox, National Institute of Dental Research, NIH), and Salivary gland dysfunction
in the curriculum: response from selected dental and dental hygiene education programs (Joan Pellegrini,
Virginia Commonwealth University). The program will be held in the Minneapolis Convention Center, Room 101J.
