Biomaterials Researcher

The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) at Stony Brook University is seeking applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track or tenured faculty appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology, with dental biomaterials research expertise. A tenure appointment requires tenure at present institution and qualifies for continuing appointment (tenure) under the Guidelines for Faculty Appointment and Promotions of the SDM.

The successful candidate will contribute to the biomaterials curriculum for dental student and graduate programs; secure internal and external funding to support their research; demonstrate a continued record of scholarship; supervise dental student, resident and MS/PhD research projects and participate in school governance. The position will focus on collaborating with clinicians in the laboratory assessment of different treatment protocols; creating and testing commercial products; and developing the next generation of dental biomaterials.

The school is completing the construction and equipping of a dental biomaterials research lab for which this position will oversee. It will be accessible to all departments in the SDM to engage in discipline-specific biomaterials research and provide opportunities for students and residents to conduct graduate level research projects.

The SDM supports dental specialty residency programs in dental anesthesiology, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics, creating opportunities for biomaterials research that have potential cross-discipline collaborations. Dental-centered research areas in the SDM include enamel and dentin bonding, dental materials, cell biology and microbiology, psychosocial aspects of health and illness, applications of cone-beam CT, dental implants, 3D printing and applications of artificial intelligence in dental imaging.
