Dr. Dolores Cannella Receives Charles Craig Teaching Award
STONY BROOK, NY, April 22, 2014 - The Sigma Tau chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon is pleased to announce that Dr. Dolores Cannella was awarded the Charles Craig Teaching award for 2014. This national award is given to a junior dental educator who has demonstrated innovative and novel teaching techniques. This is the first time a Stony Brook faculty member has been recognized for this prestigious award. Dolores was presented this award at the annual session of OKU where she was acknowledged for her accomplishments in behavioral sciences curriculum design and implementation, and inter-professional education.
The addition of Dr. Dolores Cannella, a health psychologist, to the faculty of the School of Dental Medicine brought an entirely new perspective to the delivery of oral health care. The faculty and student body experienced the significance of the interactive role that the behavioral sciences must play in the collectivity of the dental school curriculum. Dr. Cannella developed a seemingly endless array of new courses, reorganized the teaching programs, and continues to be a mentor to her students. Her ability to engage students, motivate faculty members to join in teaching, encourage roles in didactic and clinical settings, and her pervasive efforts in inter-professional education have brought together the different components of the Health Sciences Center to coordinate educational programs in the curricula of the dental, medical, nursing, social welfare, and health technology schools. Over the past five years, Dr. Cannella has created a comprehensive curriculum that spans the four years of dental school, integrates basic, clinical, and behavioral sciences, utilizes a team-based approach, and bridges didactic content with application in the clinic. Under her leadership as Division Director, every course in the areas of behavioral sciences, health care systems, practice management, and ethics and professionalism, has either been completely revised or newly developed.
We congratulate Dolores for receiving this award and for all her accomplishments!
