Dr. Anthony Fazio, Receives the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine
April 2016- Dr. Anthony Fazio, '96, was honored with the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (SDM) during the White Coat Ceremony on April 14. Dr. John Rose, President, Alumni Board of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, presented the award to Dr. Fazio. The Distinguished Alumni Award is an honor bestowed on a select few who have contributed to the profession, school and alumni in an exemplary manner. The audience rose to their feet as cheers and applause erupted during Dr. Fazio's presentation. Students, faculty, staff and guests could be seen wiping tears from their eyes as Dr. Fazio graciously and humbly accepted this honor.
Dr. Fazio led the Class of 2019 in reciting the Hippocratic Oath and cheers again filled the auditorium upon completion.
Dr. Fazio graduated Stony Brook with a B.S. In Biology in 1992. Dr. Fazio was accepted to Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine in 1992 and graduated in 1996. He received the Oral Maxillofacial Radiology Award as a graduating senior. Dr. Fazio accepted a position as a GPR resident at University Hospital Stony Brook. Completing his one year residency, Dr. Fazio went into private practice in Suffolk County. In 1998, Dr.Fazio acquired Dr. William Tinkler's practice, who was his dental school professor.
Dr. Fazio always had a desire to teach and in 1999 he was accepted as a volunteer faculty at the SDM. He married his wife, Dr. Lynn Travis, who also is a graduate, class of 1999.
Hired as part time faculty in November of 2002, Dr. Fazio taught pre-clinical and clinical courses. His love for teaching and his students earned him the honor of Class Marshall in 2006 and Grand Marshall in 2011. That honor was doubled when the class gave him the "Graduating Class Faculty Award" the same year.
Since the resurgence in 2005 of the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Alumni Association, Dr. Fazio has been an active member. He held the Presidency for two years in 2010-2012.
Dr. Fazio has been active in Alumni events, especially Dental Jeopardy which he hosts annually. Dr. Fazio has also organized, hosted, performed and run the SDM Talent Show since 1997, which is his favorite event to present. According to Dr. Fazio, "The talent show embodies what the spirit of the SDM. It's a big family made up of talented, kind, loving people.”
