National dental honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon’s (OKU) Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence is presented each year to dental educators who have displayed exemplary standards in dental pedagogy while demonstrating vision and advancement in dental education.

Dr. Andrew G. Schwartz of Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine (SDM) was named as the 2018-2019 Stephen H. Leeper Award recipient. The award will be presented on March 17, 2019, at OKU’s Annual Business Meeting in Chicago, an event attended by chapter representatives from throughout the country.

According to OKU, “this award honors individuals who have implemented innovative techniques or displayed excellence in dental education, and who have instituted creative and unique methods of educating and engaging students, faculty, and administrators.”

Dr. Schwartz has played an integral role as an educator of SDM since 1993. He has held many leadership roles including the directorship of pre-doctoral clinical programs and chairmanship roles on multiple school-wide committees.

“Dr. Schwartz has long been a vital part of our success as an institution and is dedicated to providing an excellent education to our students,” said Dr. Mary Truhlar, Dean. “Through a blend of expertise and mentorship, Dr. Schwartz supports our students throughout their critical first experiences in clinical dentistry and provides them with insights and skills essential to their future success.”

Currently, Dr. Schwartz serves as Clinical Associate Professor and Division Director for Behavioral Sciences and Practice Management within the Department of General Dentistry. Most recently, he was appointed as a Group Practice Leader for the SDM’s inaugural year of its transition to the clinical Group Practice Model.

“It is truly an honor to receive the Stephen H. Leeper Award for Teaching Excellence,” said Dr. Schwartz. “Although I am receiving this award in my name, this award represents the effort of so many faculty and staff at Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine.  Without this support, I certainly would not have been able to develop and implement the many unique programs we offer our students.”
