Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine’s tradition of placing students into advanced dental education programs continued this year as 39 members of the Class of 2023 who sought residency have matched into a position.

Students will further their careers in disciplines such as general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. Their residency training will take place at highly regarded institutions throughout New York and six other states in the US. Additionally, five soon-to-be graduates look forward to entering private practice, and one will begin his career as a general dentist in the United States Army.

“I am so very proud of this year’s class,” said Patrick Lloyd, DDS, MS, dean of the School of Dental Medicine. “With the education and experience they have received, and their strong commitment to provide high-quality care to their patients, I have the utmost confidence that they will continue to shine as dental professionals.”

After earning their Doctor of Dental Surgery this May, several 2023 SDM graduates will proceed with postgraduate training here at Stony Brook. Overall, approximately 60 percent of SDM graduates will enter a General Practice Residency program. Among them was Karen Doh, who looks forward to the next chapter in her career at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, a move that she called “a dream come true.”

"During the Match process, I was able to reflect on all the experiences I’ve gained and all the opportunities I’ve been provided with at Stony Brook to grow as a future dentist,” Doh said. “It made me realize how much I’ve accomplished in the last four years, and to see it all come together on Match Day was very emotional for me. Stony Brook is an extremely special place and amazing things are happening here. I would not be in this position without the close-knit community of faculty, mentors and friends who grew with me on a personal level and constantly supported me in this process. I’m so excited to continue my training and to showcase how fantastic my education at Stony Brook has been.”

Since opening its doors in 1973, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine has educated more than 1,500 dentists to enter the workforce, making an impact on their communities in a wide range of fields. Stony Brook is one of two state dental schools in New York, and it includes a comprehensive pre-doctoral curriculum as well as seven advanced education programs approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
