As an undergraduate Chemistry major at Binghamton University, I was a member of Dr. Wayne E. Jones’s Research Group. The title of my research was the use of conjugated polymers in the synthesis of fluorescent “Turn on” chemosensors based on a Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) mechanism. The purpose of the research was to test communication along conjugated polymer molecular wires to detect nanomolar quantities of transition metals, such as Ni+2 ions in solution to detect water pollution. I was further able to present my research at the American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in Philadelphia in August 2008.
As a dental student, I am currently interested in studying the perceptions of oral health care in the indigenous people of Chile. I believe through analyzing the barriers to oral care that exist one can become a more culturally sensitive clinician and improve the treatment provided by Stony Brook international outreach missions in the future.
