The School of Dental Medicine understands the multiple demands that are made on student's time in the curriculum. However, there are a number of opportunities within the four year curriculum for students to participate in research projects. The Office of Research has provided a brief outline (located below) for when research opportunities are available for students. The first opportunity arrives before dental school begins with the Summer Research Fellowship for incoming first year dental students. This is followed by the summer break between first and second year, with various amount of additional time being spent in the second year preparing your abstract and poster presentation for Student Research Day in the spring of your second year. Lastly, senior dental students have the opportunity to participate in a research selective to continue their research endeavors that is an additional 120 hours on top of their normal curriculum load. Throughout a student's dental career, there are opportunities for students to attend local, state and national, possibly even international research society meetings to present their abstracts, posters and other research activities.
