About the Program

Integrating Disciplines for the Advancement of Science

The DIPRESLAB laboratory performs research in Digital Dentistry, Dental Implants, and Prosthodontic Materials and Techniques. Here, dental students, residents from different dental specialties, Master and PhD students, and research faculty access a space where questions, innovation, and development integrate. The laboratory can also run validation protocols of new techniques, devices, and materials with industry support.

The director of the DIPRESLAB laboratory is Associate Professor Rafael Delgado-Ruiz, Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology.

Research

Different research methods and disciplines are integrated within the DIPRESLAB.

Surface and Topographic Analysis Research

  • Evaluation of surface characteristics, including 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional analysis
  • Roughness, surface porosity, transparent and semi-transparent film thickness evaluations

Thermography Research

  • Evaluation of internal and surface temperature changes as well as thermal emission of different bodies, and analysis of thermal changes during chemical and physical reactions

CAD-CAM and 3D Printing Research

  • Stereolithography resin printing, post-processing evaluations, optical scanning, comparison of STL files

Metrology Research

  • Calibration of parts, measurement of the accuracy of objects fabricated with different manufacturing techniques. 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional evaluations.

Wear Testing

  • Two and three body wear tests can be completed parameters as surfaces, speed, and load can be adjusted to the research requirements

Implant Research

  • Implant mechanics, geometry, surfaces, implant mechanical evaluations, simulation of implant insertion, and simulation of implant prosthetics

Torque Analysis

  • Digital evaluation of maximum and minimum rotational torques is possible

Mentorship and Available Opportunities

Mentorship is available to Stony Brook students and research faculty. Dr. Delgado-Ruiz and the DIPRESLAB team provide training:

  • on the proper use of the research devices of the DIPRESLAB, measurement techniques, and calibration
  • related to systematic reviews of the literature and meta-analysis studies

To be mentored within DIPRESLAB, students should write to Dr. Delago-Ruiz to express their interest and include a short CV as an attachment.
Mentee students will receive six hours of training before the beginning of any research activity.

At present, no more than three people (including the lab director) can be present simultaneously within the lab to allow for social distancing.

Funding

The laboratory is, in part, the result of investment efforts of Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, and from research funds from the laboratory director, Dr. Delgado-Ruiz. Furthermore, materials used for testing are provided through research proposals presented to sponsors. It is possible to complete agreements and MOU with industry sponsors.
